Major project completed for Ballymore

After some seven or eight months, I am pleased to be able to announce the completion of a major project for the UK & Ireland based developers Ballymore. Still confidential, the project drew heavily on my experience of similar economic/construction stage conditions during the previous recession and concerned both strategy and its implementation.

Portico launches Romanian retail/office building

Budapest-based Portico investments last week launched Phase 1 of a building particularly closely associated with Definition, its complete re-design having been sucessfully championed by Michael Taite (see Case Study: Oradea Plaza). Supermarket tenants Billa, who dominate the ground floor, led the opening, to be followed in the coming weeks by a pharmacy, a café and other signed-up retailers.

The offices will be completed in September and are looking especially impressive. They will provide the best modern office space available anywhere in western Romania.

Beaney Pearce best lets year ever

In the year following a Definition-led review, central London estate agents Beaney Pearce have notched up their best ever year for lettings revenue and volumes. They have also enjoyed a “striking increase” in converting market appraisals (valuations) into instructions to sell.

A host of changes were implemented following the review, which was carried out in early 2009. One of the more noticeable outcomes is their new website - see www.beaneypearce.co.uk . Other measures focused principally on customer service and effective communication of Beaney Pearce’s many distinctive strengths.

New Carritt & Co website launched

I am delighted to report that the new website of Definition legal clients Carritt & Co is now live at www.carritt.co.uk . Unusual in being an HTML site with rotating panels, it is a good example of how a boutique firm can avoid the ‘template trap’ and thus convey its distinctiveness.

The new site was project managed and written by Definition and created by Oomph Design.

Everatt & Co wins major Wiltshire school case

Definition client Everatt & Company solicitors has succesfully defended the Ridgeway School in Wiltshire in a case which threatened serious implications for the education sector, prompting significant national interest. The case involved allegations that the school should be held responsible for the consequences of a fight which two pupils arranged to take place after school hours, at a secluded part of the school’s 32 acre site where they knew they were unlikley to be seen.

However, despite a trial lasting six weeks, involving 52 witnesses and costs running into millions of pounds, the Hon. Mr Justice Nicol found in favour of the school on all eight points on which liability had been argued.

Definition advised Everatt & Company on PR issues arising out of the case.

HFN Landscapes instruct Definition for new market push

A serious player in the landscaping market for local authorities and others, HFN has chosen Defnition to assist with marketing strategy and implementation of its new HFN Natural Play design & build service. Taking advantage of HFN’s landscaping expertise, this offers clients such as schools and local government organisations an alternative to standard ‘hard’ children’s play area schemes, focusing on landscape features instead of metal and plastic structures.

Definition’s role in HFN’s Natural Play campaign includes input into strategy and the creation of a new CRM, overseeing all design and content and project management of a dedicated website and direct marketing.

Process Evolution chooses Definition

Following a competitive pitch, leading emergency services consultancy Process Evolution has selected Definition to oversee its marketing strategy and implementation across all media.

Process Evolution’s clients are predominantly in (but by no means limited to) the emergency services sector, including over 60% of UK police forces. Its most high profile work is in helping clients that use shift-working staff handling varying 24 hour demand, to secure often dramatic efficiency gains. Red’s Tom Kingham wins Young Data Centre Engineer of the Year award

I am delighted to be able to report that Tom Kingham, a design engineer with Definition clients Red, last night was named Young Mission Critical Engineer of the Year, in the third annual Datacentre Leaders Awards. Definition drafts and edits all Red award submissions, a remarkably high number of which have proved successful.

Red shortlisted for two CIBSE low carbon performance awards…

Red Engineering Design has secured shortlistings for major client J Sainsbury plc in the 2010 CIBSE Low Carbon Performance Awards, in the Client of the Year: Low Carbon Operation and Client of the Year: Energy Performance categories. Both submissions were drafted for Red by Michael Taite of Definition, in consultation with Red partners Halsall and client J Sainsbury plc.

The shortlistings reflect Sainsbury’s highly impressive and on-going progress in reducing its energy use and carbon emissions, much of it through engineering innovations devised by Sainsbury’s consultants, including Red and Halsall. Sainsbury has already achieved a 20% carbon cut by 2004/05 and is now on target to cut a further 25% by 2012.

The Awards ceremony will take place on 3rd February 2010 at a high profile ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel. For further information, please visit the CIBSE awards website.

Environmental Law Foundation wins £68,000 EHRC grant

It is great to be able to announce that the Environmental Law Foundation, of which I am now the Vice Chair, has been awarded £68,000 by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. The funds are to cover an 18 month period over which ELF will carry out outreach work on human rights and environmental rights in all London Boroughs, 29 Medway boroughs in Kent, Northumberland/North East, Teeside, Bristol and Cardiff.
