Over many years, I have acted both as a business development consultant to Work Structuring, and as a fully-trained Work Structuring Consultant myself. Headed by its creator, Christian Schumacher, Work Structuring offers a detailed, methodical approach to analysing an organisation’s inherent strengths and weaknesses is pure, applied common sense. It reveals what, in retrospect, seems obvious, but which until then had always proved impossible to see. Primarily used within manufacturing and pharmaceutical sectors with the likes of ICI, 3M and Sanofi Aventis, WSL methodology is as applicable to primary schools as it would be to, say, the UN or the NHS. Everything I know about the technical analysis of organisational structures comes from my work with Christian.
The most recent project on which I worked with Work Structuring was with the UK R&D department of a major international pharmaceutical manufacturer, focusing on the efficiency of their workflows. Amongst many things, this revealed – to an extent that amazed the managers involved – the disparity between the existing points at which responsibilities were handed over from one team to another, and the most logical, natural and efficient points for such handovers.
